Ring riding
On this so-called "3rd Pentecost," the folkloric tradition continues, namely ring riding. This sport involves the ring rider on an unsaddled horse using his lance to stab a ring 38 millimeters or smaller halfway down the track. The competition lasts all day. The winner is jugged by his or her colleagues: he or she is thrown in the air three times and caught again.
There are several stories about the origins of ring-riding on Whit Monday. One explanation is that in the past in still agricultural Walcheren the day after Whitsuntide the farmhands and farm maids got a day off. They were allowed to take the horses out to do something fun.
